Cable Pulldown Bicep Curl

Stand facing a cable machine with the bar or handle at upper chest height. Pull the bar down in a lat pulldown motion and transition smoothly into a curling motion by bending your elbows. Focus on engaging your lats first, then your biceps as you curl toward your shoulders, then reverse the movement with control.

How to Do the Cable Pulldown Bicep Curl

  1. Stand facing a cable machine with a straight bar attached to the high pulley, feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Grip the bar with an underhand grip slightly narrower than shoulder width.
  3. Step back slightly so your arms are fully extended and angled up toward the pulley.
  4. Brace your core and pull the bar down in a lat-pulldown motion until your elbows are at your sides.
  5. Without pausing, curl the bar upward toward your shoulders by bending your elbows further.
  6. Squeeze your biceps at the top of the curl portion.
  7. Reverse the motion by extending your elbows, then raising your arms back to the starting position.
  8. Perform the combined pulldown-to-curl sequence smoothly for each rep.

Common Mistakes

  • Separating the two movements too much: Pausing for a long beat between the pulldown and curl portions turns this into two disconnected exercises instead of one flowing motion. Keep the transition smooth and continuous.
  • Leaning back excessively: Using a big backward lean to help pull the bar down shifts work away from the target muscles. Keep your torso upright with only a slight lean.
  • Using too much weight: Overloading the cable forces you to rely on body momentum for both portions of the movement. Choose a weight that lets you control both the pulldown and the curl.
  • Letting the elbows flare during the curl: Elbows drifting outward during the curl portion reduces biceps engagement. Keep your elbows close to your torso as you curl.
