What Is an Overhead Press 1RM?

Your overhead press one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can press strictly from the shoulders to full lockout overhead for a single rep, with no leg drive. It's the reference number lifters use to program shoulder and upper-body pressing strength, and it's usually the smallest of the big four lift numbers.

Because the bar travels directly over your head with no rack or spotter able to help if you stall mid-rep, a true overhead press max attempt carries real risk of the bar coming down on you if you grind too long. It's also one of the slower lifts to progress, so grinding max attempts often just adds fatigue without new information.

The more useful approach is to estimate your 1RM from a working set of 1-12 strict reps using a rep-max formula. That's what this calculator does automatically, giving you a safe, repeatable number to program from.

How the Overhead Press 1RM Formulas Work

This calculator runs your overhead press weight and reps through two widely used strength formulas, then averages them for a steadier estimate.

Epley formula: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). Epley is the default in most fitness apps and tends to estimate a touch higher as rep count increases.

Brzycki formula: 1RM = weight × (36 ÷ (37 - reps)). Brzycki is generally the more accurate of the two in the 3-10 rep range most overhead press working sets fall into.

Because the overhead press is a smaller, more technique-sensitive lift than squat, bench, or deadlift, form breakdown (excess back lean, partial lockout) can throw off your rep count and skew the estimate more than it would on bigger lifts. Keep reps strict so the number this calculator gives you actually reflects your pressing strength — it caps input at 12 reps and averages both formulas to keep the estimate realistic.

Why Estimating Your OHP Beats Maxing Out Every Week

  • It's safer overhead. A stalled overhead press has nowhere good to go — there's no rack to bail into. Estimating from a working set removes the risk of getting stuck under a bar overhead entirely.
  • It accounts for slow progress. The overhead press typically adds strength in small increments over months, not weeks. A rep-max estimate captures gradual progress far more reliably than an occasional, fatigue-skewed max attempt.
  • It keeps programming honest. Pressing progressions in 5/3/1 and most upper-body programs rely on accurate 1RM percentages. An estimate from a clean working set keeps your prescribed weights realistic.
  • It saves your shoulders. Max overhead attempts put significant strain through the shoulder joint at end range. An estimate costs nothing beyond your normal working set and keeps your shoulders healthier long term.

Does strict press vs push press change my 1RM estimate?

Yes, significantly. A push press uses leg drive to help launch the bar, so lifters typically move noticeably more weight than on a strict press. This calculator assumes a strict, no-leg-drive rep — if you use any leg dip, your estimate will overstate your true strict pressing strength. Keep your working set consistent with whichever variation you're tracking.

Why does the overhead press progress more slowly than bench, squat, or deadlift?

The shoulder joint has less muscle mass to recruit than the hips or chest, and pressing weight directly overhead is more technically demanding and stability-limited than a horizontal push. It's normal to add only a few kilos to your OHP 1RM over months where bench or squat might add that in weeks — don't judge OHP progress by the same timeline as the bigger lifts.

What rep range gives the most accurate overhead press estimate?

Stick to 3-8 strict reps where possible. Below 3 reps, a single failed lockout or a slightly early stop skews the number more; above 8-10 reps, shoulder stabilizer fatigue sets in disproportionately and the formulas start to overestimate. The 3-8 rep window is the sweet spot for both formulas used in this calculator.

What's a good overhead press 1RM for my bodyweight?

As a rough guide, a novice male lifter can usually press around 0.5x bodyweight, an intermediate lifter 0.65-0.75x bodyweight, and an advanced lifter close to 1x bodyweight or more. See the strength standards table above for a fuller breakdown by training age.
