Your bench press one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can press for a single, full-range rep with good form. It's the standard unit strength athletes use to compare bench strength, program training percentages, and track progress over time.
Testing a true 1RM is exhausting, adds unnecessary fatigue, and carries real injury risk — especially on bench, where failing under a heavy bar without a spotter is genuinely dangerous. Almost nobody needs to test a true max more than once or twice a year.
Instead, the standard approach is to estimate your 1RM from a normal working set of 1-12 reps using a proven formula. That's what this calculator does automatically.
This calculator runs your weight and reps through two of the most widely used strength formulas, then averages them for a more stable estimate.
Epley formula: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). Epley tends to estimate slightly higher and is the formula built into most fitness apps and gym calculators.
Brzycki formula: 1RM = weight × (36 ÷ (37 - reps)). Brzycki is generally considered the more accurate of the two in the 3-10 rep range, where most working sets fall.
Neither formula is perfect — both lose accuracy above ~12 reps because muscular endurance starts to matter more than raw strength. That's why this calculator caps input at 12 reps and averages both formulas rather than leaning on just one.
Use this table as a rough benchmark for where your estimated 1RM sits relative to other lifters. These are general reference ranges for an average adult bodyweight (roughly 80 kg for men, 65 kg for women) — your own ratio will shift with bodyweight, training age, and limb length.

Within the 1-10 rep range, Epley and Brzycki are typically accurate within about 2-5% of a true tested max. Accuracy drops the higher your rep count goes, which is why we cap input at 12 reps.
Only occasionally — for example before a powerlifting meet, or if your estimated 1RM has stalled for 12+ weeks despite consistent training. For everyday programming, an estimate from your working sets is safer and just as useful.
They're built from different data sets and weight the relationship between reps and fatigue slightly differently. Neither is 'correct' — averaging both, as this calculator does, gives a more balanced estimate than trusting either one alone.
As a rough guide, a novice male lifter can typically bench close to bodyweight, an intermediate lifter 1-1.25x bodyweight, and an advanced lifter 1.5x bodyweight or more. See the strength standards table above for more detail.
