How to Do the Dumbbell Shrug

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand hanging at your sides, palms facing your thighs.
  2. Set your feet hip width apart, chest up, arms fully straight.
  3. Exhale and lift your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as they will go.
  4. Hold the top position for one to two seconds, squeezing the traps hard.
  5. Lower the shoulders slowly until you feel a stretch at the bottom, letting the weights pull them down.
  6. Inhale during the descent and keep your arms passive; they are hooks, not lifters.
  7. Repeat for the planned reps without rolling the shoulders in circles.

Common Mistakes

  • Rolling the shoulders: circling forward or backward adds no extra trap work and irritates the shoulder joint; shrug straight up and straight down.
  • Bending the elbows: turning the shrug into a mini upright row brings the arms in; keep the elbows locked straight.
  • Skipping the pause: bouncing quickly through reps misses the peak contraction where traps grow; own the top for a full second.
  • Cutting the stretch: stopping the descent early keeps the traps in a half range; let the dumbbells pull your shoulders fully down between reps.
