Dumbbell One Arm Shoulder Press

The one arm dumbbell shoulder press moves a single weight from shoulder to lockout while the rest of the body fights to stay level. Pressing one side at a time exposes strength differences between arms and turns the core and obliques into hard-working stabilizers that resist side bending. It is a strong choice for balanced shoulder development and for athletes who press one-sided in sport.

How to Do the Dumbbell One Arm Shoulder Press

  1. Stand with feet shoulder width apart holding a dumbbell at shoulder height, palm facing forward or slightly inward.
  2. Keep the free arm out to the side or braced on your hip for balance.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes so your torso stays tall and level.
  4. Press the dumbbell straight up until your arm is locked out overhead, biceps close to your ear.
  5. Keep your hips and shoulders square; do not let the body lean away from the weight.
  6. Lower the dumbbell under control back to shoulder height.
  7. Complete all reps on one arm, then switch sides.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning away from the working arm: tipping the torso sideways to sneak under the weight loads the spine unevenly and hides weak shoulders. Stay tall and let the abs hold you level.
  • Turning it into a push press: dipping the knees to bounce the weight up skips the strict shoulder work. Keep the legs quiet; save leg drive for deliberate push press sets.
  • Arching the lower back at lockout: flaring the ribs to finish the press transfers stress to the lumbar spine. Keep the ribs down and finish with the arm, not the back.
  • Cutting the range short: stopping below lockout or starting from cheek height shrinks the productive range. Press from shoulder to a full, vertical lockout every rep.
