How to Do the Dumbbell Standing Alternate Arnold Press

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing your body, elbows bent.
  2. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and brace your core.
  3. Rotate one palm outward as you press that dumbbell straight overhead to full extension.
  4. Lower that arm back down while rotating your palm back to face your body at the finish.
  5. As one arm lowers, begin pressing the other dumbbell up with the same rotating motion.
  6. Keep your torso upright throughout, avoiding any backward lean as you press.
  7. Alternate sides for the full set, keeping a steady rhythm between reps.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning back to press: Arching backward to help drive the weight up shifts strain to the lower back. Keep your ribs down and core braced through every rep.
  • Rushing the rotation: Skipping the palm rotation turns this into a regular shoulder press and misses the added rotator cuff work. Rotate deliberately on both the way up and down.
  • Pressing too far forward: Letting the dumbbells drift in front of your head instead of overhead reduces shoulder stability. Keep the press path directly above your shoulders.
  • Losing rhythm between arms: Rushing the alternation causes sloppy form on the descending arm. Let one arm fully control its descent before the other starts pressing.
