Dumbbell Standing Arnold Press

The dumbbell standing Arnold press adds a built-in rotation to a normal shoulder press, starting with palms facing you and finishing palms forward overhead. That rotation works the front and side deltoids through a slightly longer range of motion than a standard press, which is why it became a staple accessory movement for shoulder size.

How to Do the Dumbbell Standing Arnold Press

  1. Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing your body and elbows bent in front of you.
  2. Brace your core and set your feet about hip width apart for a stable base.
  3. Begin pressing the dumbbells upward while rotating your palms outward as they rise.
  4. Continue the press until your arms are fully extended overhead with palms now facing forward.
  5. Pause briefly at the top without shrugging your shoulders up toward your ears.
  6. Reverse the motion, rotating your palms back toward your body as you lower the dumbbells to the start.
  7. Keep the rotation smooth and continuous rather than pressing first and twisting afterward.
  8. Perform 8 to 12 reps, resetting your grip between sets if the dumbbells feel unstable.

Common Mistakes

  • Rotating too early: Twisting the wrists before you start pressing turns this into a slower regular press. Let the rotation happen gradually as the weight travels upward.
  • Arching the lower back: Leaning back to help the dumbbells up puts stress on the spine instead of the shoulders. Keep your ribs down and core braced through the whole press.
  • Using too much weight: This is a technical press, and going heavy usually breaks down the rotation into a jerky motion. Drop the load until you can control the twist cleanly.
  • Flaring the elbows too wide at the bottom: Starting with elbows way out to the sides strains the shoulder joint. Keep them roughly in front of your ribs at the starting position.
