How to Do the Cable Lateral Pulldown (with Rope Attachment)
Attach a rope handle to a high pulley and sit facing the machine with your thighs secured under the pads.
Grip the rope with both hands, palms facing each other, arms extended overhead.
Lean back slightly and lift your chest, keeping a neutral spine.
Brace your core and pull the rope down toward your upper chest, letting your hands separate as you pull.
Drive your elbows down and out to the sides as the rope descends.
Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the bottom of the pull.
Slowly extend your arms back to the starting position, allowing a full stretch through your lats.
Keep your torso still throughout, avoiding a backward lean to help the pull.
Common Mistakes
Leaning back too far: Using body lean instead of the lats to move the rope turns this into a rowing motion. Keep your torso close to upright with only a slight lean.
Pulling with the arms instead of the back: Bending mostly at the elbows without driving them down reduces lat engagement. Focus on pulling your elbows toward your hips.
Not separating the rope ends: Keeping your hands together through the whole pull removes the added stretch and contraction the rope provides. Let your hands split apart as the rope reaches your chest.
Cutting the top stretch short: Not letting your arms extend fully at the top limits the range of motion. Allow a complete stretch before starting the next pull.
