Band Thruster is a beginner band exercise for the quadriceps. Most lifters train it for 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 reps.
This exercise combines a squat and an overhead press using a resistance band. Lower into a squat, then drive upward while pressing the handles overhead in one continuous movement.
Use the band thruster in a full body circuit, a conditioning finisher or a home workout as a main movement for 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 reps. It trains the legs, shoulders and core in one piece and raises the heart rate fast, so it works for both strength endurance and cardio.
Start with a medium band and a stance that gives tension at the shoulders in the bottom of the squat. Progress by widening the stance, using a thicker band, doubling the band, or moving faster for timed sets. The most common fault is pausing at the top of the squat and pressing with the arms alone: time the press so the legs launch the handles and the arms only finish the lockout.
It works the quads, glutes and hamstrings in the squat and the shoulders and triceps in the press, with the core bracing throughout. It is one of the most complete single movements you can do with a band.
Use 12 to 20 reps per set for strength endurance, or 30 to 45 second timed intervals for conditioning. Bands are lighter than barbells, so higher reps work best.
The dumbbell version allows heavier, fixed loads and better strength progression, while the band version is lighter, joint friendly and peaks tension at the top of the press. Use the band at home or for high rep conditioning.
