Barbell Zercher Carry is an intermediate barbell exercise for the primary: full body secondary: abs.
Cradling a barbell in the crooks of your elbows and walking for distance forces an upright torso against a front-loaded weight that wants to pull you forward. The odd hold makes this one of the more humbling carries once the load gets even moderately heavy.
Program the barbell Zercher carry for 3 to 4 sets of 20 to 40 metres at the end of a lower body or full body session, or as the core work on a conditioning day. It replaces planks and sit ups for lifters who want core strength that transfers to squats and deadlifts.
Set the rack just below the elbow crease, wrap the bar in a towel or pad if the forearms are sensitive, and brace hard before the walk. Start with 40 kg for men and 20 to 25 kg for women, adding 5 kg once every set is completed without the bar sliding. The most common fault is the elbows dropping and the back rounding halfway through; fix it by shortening the distance until posture holds for the whole walk.
It works the entire core, the upper back and the biceps as they hold the bar in place, while the quads, glutes and calves power the walking. It is one of the most complete trunk exercises available.
The bar does press into the elbow creases, which is uncomfortable at first but not harmful. A towel wrapped around the bar, a thick bar pad or a long sleeve shirt reduces the discomfort while you build tolerance.
The Zercher carry is harder on the core because the front load pulls you into flexion and you must resist it. Farmer's walks load the grip and lateral core more. Both belong in a program, but the Zercher carry is the better pick for anti flexion strength.
