Cable Kneeling Crunch

This exercise is performed kneeling in front of a high cable pulley while holding the rope attachment near the sides of the head. Brace the core and curl the torso downward toward the floor by contracting the abdominal muscles, then slowly return to the starting position without allowing the hips to shift.

How to Do the Cable Kneeling Crunch

  1. Attach a rope to a high pulley and kneel facing the machine about a meter back.
  2. Hold the rope ends against the sides of your head, or in front of your forehead, and let the cable pull your torso tall.
  3. Set your hips above your knees and keep them there; this is your starting position.
  4. Exhale and crunch your ribs down toward your pelvis, rounding the upper back as your elbows travel toward your thighs.
  5. Squeeze the abs hard when your spine is fully flexed.
  6. Return under control, letting the cable stretch your abs back to the tall starting position.
  7. Repeat without letting the hips rock forward and back.

Common Mistakes

  • Hinging at the hips: sitting back toward your heels and bowing forward moves the weight with the hip flexors, not the abs. Freeze the hips in place and move only your spine.
  • Pulling with the arms: dragging the rope down like a pulldown turns it into an arm exercise. The hands only anchor the rope to your head; the ribs do the pulling.
  • Cutting the stretch: staying hunched between reps keeps the abs in a short range and limits growth. Let the cable draw you back to a tall spine before each crunch.
  • Loading too heavy too soon: an overloaded stack forces momentum and hip movement into every rep. Pick a weight you can flex the spine against slowly for the full set.
