Bosu Ball Balance Counterbalanced Skater Squat

Stand on a BOSU balance trainer and hold a light weight or extend your arms forward for counterbalance. Shift your weight onto one leg and lower into a single-leg squat by bending at the knee and hip while maintaining balance on the unstable surface. Keep your torso steady and descend with control, then drive through the heel of the working leg to stand back up, engaging the quads, glutes, and core throughout.

How to Do the Bosu Ball Balance Counterbalanced Skater Squat

  1. Stand on top of the Bosu ball dome with one foot centered and the other hovering just off the surface.
  2. Hold a light dumbbell or weight plate with both hands out in front of your chest for counterbalance.
  3. Brace your core and find your balance point before starting to bend the standing knee.
  4. Lower into a single-leg squat by pushing your hips back and letting the free leg drift forward for balance.
  5. Descend until your thigh is roughly parallel to the floor or as deep as you can control on the unstable surface.
  6. Drive through the heel and midfoot of the standing leg to press back up to the start.
  7. Complete all reps on one side before switching legs, resetting your footing on the dome each time.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing off center on the dome: Placing your foot near the edge tips the Bosu unpredictably. Center your foot over the middle of the dome before you begin.
  • Letting the knee cave inward: A wobbling knee that drifts toward the midline strains the ligaments under load. Actively push the knee out over your toes on every rep.
  • Rushing the tempo: Moving fast on an unstable surface is how ankles roll. Slow the descent down and control the wobble instead of fighting it quickly.
  • Skipping the counterbalance weight: Squatting with empty hands on the dome makes lifters lean too far forward. Hold even a light plate out front to keep your torso upright.
