Lever Shoulder Press (plate Loaded)

The plate loaded lever shoulder press is a seated machine press that guides the handles overhead along a fixed arc, letting you load the shoulders and triceps heavily without needing to balance dumbbells or a barbell. Because the machine controls the bar path, it is a good option for building pressing strength when shoulder stability is a limiting factor.

How to Do the Lever Shoulder Press (plate Loaded)

  1. Adjust the seat height so the handles start level with your shoulders.
  2. Sit down with your back flat against the pad and grip the handles with an overhand grip.
  3. Brace your core and keep your feet flat on the floor or footrest.
  4. Press the handles straight overhead by extending your arms, stopping just short of locking out your elbows.
  5. Pause briefly at the top without shrugging your shoulders up toward your ears.
  6. Slowly bend your elbows and lower the handles back down to shoulder level under control.
  7. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Common Mistakes

  • Seat set too low: Starting with the handles above head height forces an awkward, unstable press. Adjust the seat so the handles begin at shoulder level.
  • Arching the lower back: Pushing the chest up and arching to press more weight strains the spine. Keep your back flat against the pad throughout.
  • Locking out and shrugging: Jamming the elbows straight and shrugging at the top loads the neck instead of the shoulders. Stop just short of lockout and keep the shoulders down.
  • Rushing the descent: Dropping the handles quickly loses tension and control. Lower them at the same pace you pressed them up.
