Box Exercises

Box exercises use a sturdy, height-adjustable platform for step-ups, box jumps, and depth work, movements that build single-leg strength and explosive lower-body power in a way that's harder to replicate with a barbell alone. Step-ups in particular are one of the most effective unilateral exercises available, training each leg independently while also demanding real hip and knee stability through the full range of the movement. Box jumps and depth jumps are a staple in athletic training specifically for developing jump height and landing mechanics, teaching your body to absorb force safely, which matters just as much as producing it. Box training suits athletes working on power and jump performance, and lifters looking to add unilateral strength work to address side-to-side imbalances a barbell squat can't catch. Program step-ups in the 8 to 12 rep range per leg, and keep box jump volume low, 3 to 6 reps per set, prioritizing landing quality over total reps. The most common mistake is starting with too high a box before landing mechanics are solid, chasing height for its own sake instead of building the base of jump and landing technique that makes higher boxes safe later. A second is skipping the step-down and stepping or jumping down instead, which adds unnecessary impact to what should be a controlled part of the exercise.
