Cable Front Raise

This exercise involves standing in front of a cable machine and lifting a straight handle forward in a controlled arc. The movement is performed with a slight bend in the elbows, raising the arms to shoulder height while keeping the torso stable and avoiding momentum, then slowly returning to the start position.

How to Do the Cable Front Raise

  1. Attach a straight bar or handle to a low pulley and stand facing away from the machine.
  2. Grip the handle with both hands, arms extended down in front of your thighs.
  3. Keep a slight bend in your elbows and brace your core.
  4. Raise the handle forward and up until your arms reach shoulder height.
  5. Pause briefly at the top without letting your shoulders shrug up toward your ears.
  6. Lower the handle back down with control to the starting position.
  7. Keep your torso still throughout, avoiding any backward lean to generate momentum.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning back to swing the weight up: Using body momentum instead of the front delts defeats the purpose of the cable's constant tension. Keep your torso upright and let the shoulders do the work.
  • Raising past shoulder height: Lifting the handle above shoulder level shifts stress onto the shoulder joint without added benefit. Stop the raise once your arms are level with your shoulders.
  • Locking the elbows straight: Fully extending the elbows increases strain on the joint over repeated reps. Keep a slight, consistent bend throughout.
  • Rushing the lowering phase: Dropping the weight quickly on the way down gives up half the tension the cable provides. Lower for at least two seconds each rep.
