Body Extension is a beginner bodyweight exercise for the primary: quadriceps. Most lifters train it for 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps.
A standing bodyweight movement where you reach overhead and extend the whole body in one line. Wakes up the posterior chain and shoulders, common in warm ups and mobility work.
Place the body extension at the very start of a warm up or between sets of seated work for 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. It is a mobility and activation drill, not a strength exercise, so it belongs before squats, presses or overhead work to open the shoulders and switch on the posterior chain.
Set up with the feet hip width and the arms relaxed, then move slowly enough that each reach lasts about two seconds. It is a bodyweight only movement; progress by adding a one to two second hold at the top, rising higher onto the toes for balance, or holding a light 1 to 2 kg plate overhead. The most common fault is extending from the lower back instead of the upper back, fixed by squeezing the glutes and keeping the ribs down as the arms travel overhead.
It stretches and activates the lats, shoulders, abdominals, hip flexors and glutes while mobilising the upper back. It is not a quad exercise despite often being listed under legs, because the knees barely move.
Do them at the start of a warm up or after long periods of sitting. Two or three sets of ten reps are enough to open the shoulders and hips before training.
Yes, it counters the rounded shoulders and tight hip flexors that come from sitting by taking the body into full extension. Done daily it helps you feel taller and makes overhead lifts easier to set up.
