Dumbbell Finger Curls

Dumbbell finger curls train grip strength by letting the weight roll down to your fingertips and then curling it back into your palm. The finger flexors and forearm muscles do all the work through a longer range than standard wrist curls. Stronger fingers carry over directly to deadlifts, pull ups, and carrying anything heavy.

How to Do the Dumbbell Finger Curls

  1. Sit on a bench holding a dumbbell in each hand with an underhand grip, forearms resting on your thighs.
  2. Position your wrists just past your knees so your hands can move freely.
  3. Slowly open your fingers and let each dumbbell roll down toward your fingertips.
  4. Stop just before the point where you would lose the weight.
  5. Curl your fingers to pull the dumbbell back into your palm.
  6. Finish by flexing your wrists upward to complete the rep.
  7. Lower under control and repeat, keeping the movement smooth.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the dumbbell drop too far: losing control at the fingertips risks dropping the weight and jamming a finger. Stop while you still own the dumbbell.
  • Using momentum from the arms: bouncing the thighs or swinging the elbows takes the fingers out of it. Only the hands should move.
  • Choosing a weight you can barely hold: grip work needs full finger range, not a static squeeze. Pick a load you can roll all the way down and curl back up.
  • Training them fresh before pulling work: fried grip ruins deadlift and row sessions. Do finger curls at the end of your workout.
