Dumbbell Bench Seated Press

A shoulder exercise performed with dumbbells that combines a pressing motion with a rotational movement. Starting with the palms facing the body at shoulder level, the dumbbells are rotated outward while being pressed overhead, then lowered back under control to the starting position.

How to Do the Dumbbell Bench Seated Press

  1. Sit sideways on a flat bench with your feet planted firmly on the floor about shoulder width apart.
  2. Bring a dumbbell to each shoulder, palms facing forward, forearms vertical.
  3. Sit tall: stack your ribs over your hips and brace your abs, since there is no backrest to lean on.
  4. Inhale, then press both dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  5. Exhale at the top, keeping the weights over your shoulders rather than drifting forward.
  6. Lower the dumbbells with control back to shoulder height.
  7. Re-set your posture between reps; if you feel yourself leaning back, the load is too heavy.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning back as fatigue sets in: without a backrest the temptation is to arch and press at an incline; end the set when you can no longer stay vertical.
  • Going too heavy too soon: this variation exposes weak trunk control; use noticeably less weight than your supported seated press, often 10 to 20 percent lighter.
  • Feet loose on the floor: an unstable base makes the whole press wobble; drive your feet into the ground like a standing press.
  • Holding your breath through many reps: losing the breathing rhythm collapses the brace; inhale at the bottom, exhale as you press.
