Dumbbell Standing Calf Raise

The dumbbell standing calf raise is a simple loaded calf exercise you can do anywhere with a pair of dumbbells. Rising onto the balls of your feet against the extra load works the gastrocnemius, the larger visible calf muscle. Doing it on a step or plate adds a stretch at the bottom and makes the exercise far more effective.

How to Do the Dumbbell Standing Calf Raise

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and stand tall with your feet hip width apart.
  2. For a fuller range, place the balls of your feet on a step or weight plate with your heels hanging off.
  3. Keep your knees straight but not locked, and brace your core for balance.
  4. Push through the balls of your feet and raise your heels as high as possible.
  5. Pause at the top and squeeze the calves hard for a second.
  6. Lower your heels slowly until you feel a deep stretch in the calves.
  7. Repeat without bouncing, keeping your body in a straight line throughout.

Common Mistakes

  • Bouncing out of the bottom: rebounding off the stretch uses the Achilles tendon like a spring instead of working the muscle. Pause briefly in the stretched position.
  • Cutting the range short: tiny pulses at the top skip the stretch, where much of the growth stimulus happens. Lower the heels fully every rep.
  • Bending the knees: turning it into a mini squat shifts work to the quads and soleus and lets you cheat the weight up. Keep the legs straight.
  • Leaning forward or rocking: swinging the torso robs the calves of tension and challenges your grip more than your calves. Stay tall, and hold a wall for balance if needed.
