The Classic Bro Split Routine (Does It Still Work in 2026?)
The bro split gets bashed online but built most of the physiques you grew up admiring. Here's the classic bro split routine and an honest look at when it still works in 2026.
The bro split routine — one muscle group per day, 5 days a week — gets bashed online. And yet: it built most of the physiques you grew up admiring. Arnold, Franco, most of the '90s bodybuilders — bro split all the way.
I'm Pasha, founder of 1RM.fit. Here's the honest bro split routine and when it still makes sense in 2026.

Does Bro Split Actually Work?
Yes and no.
- Works for: Advanced lifters with high recovery capacity, enhanced athletes, or lifters who genuinely can't train 4+ days per week
- Doesn't work for: Natural intermediates who'd grow faster on higher frequency
Bro Split vs Higher Frequency
The research: for equal weekly volume, hitting each muscle 2× per week grows more muscle than 1× per week. Bro split violates that rule.
BUT: bro split makes it easier to accumulate 25-30 sets per muscle in one session. That's hard to hit with higher frequency splits.
Who Should Run Bro Split
- Advanced lifters (5+ years)
- Lifters with recovery issues on higher frequency splits
- People who genuinely enjoy the mental focus of one-muscle-per-day
- People who train 5-6 days by preference
Who Shouldn't Run Bro Split
- Beginners
- Intermediates still gaining strength quickly
- Anyone under 3-4 gym days per week (you'll miss body parts)
Bro split isn't bad. It's just not the most efficient option for most people most of the time. If you love it, run it — just don't claim it beats upper/lower on paper.
Track Bro Split Volume
1RM.fit auto-tracks weekly sets per muscle group. Bro splits accumulate massive volume per session — track it or blow up recovery.
Compare: upper lower split, push pull legs, full body routine.
